Why You Should Join DIFF!
The purpose, objectives and efforts of the DIFF Club are to benefit Cape Lookout National Seashore, its visitors, and The DIFF Club membership. The DIFF Club's efforts and endeavors will be in the following major areas:
1. The DIFF Club will apply a major portion of our physical and fiscal resources to the living accommodations on Core Banks South (“Davis Island”). Our goal will be to maintain and improve as many existing cabins as possible in a clean, comfortable and secure state. This will be done in harmony with the Park Service and the Concessionaire.
2. The DIFF Club will dedicate its physical and fiscal resources to Park Service projects that are designed to protect and preserve Core Banks South and its historical structures and heritage.
3. The DIFF Club will be, to the extent possible, involved in projects designed to protect the fish and wildlife population in the Core Banks South.
4. The DIFF Club will maintain an awareness of activities that could affect Core Banks South in a positive or negative way and react to such a situation in a way that would best affect the overall purpose of the DIFF Club.
5. The DIFF Club will encourage fellowship among its members including periodic newsletters and social functions.
6. The DIFF Club will develop and/or promote a code of ethics for beach behavior no less than required by Park Service and other agencies.
The DIFF Club's memberships will be open to all.
The club had input when the NPS revised the Park Management Plan. One proposal was to have all park access thru park headquarters on Harker’s Island. The final plan reflects the recommendation of the DIFF Club, which was to continue service from Davis.
What is in the future?
The selection of a new concessionaire may be taking place in the next couple of years or so. DIFF will have the opportunity to have a say. Even more important is the issue of vehicle access to the island. There are national environmental organizations that would like to deny or greatly restrict all vehicle access to the island. This issue is in the courts now and it is imperative that the NPS prepare an acceptable plan for vehicle access or the results might not be in the best interest of the sportsman. The NPS will be asking for input from sportsmen’s organizations like DIFF and others to formulate a plan. We need to be ready as a strong voice to address this and similar issues.
The DIFF Club has come a long way since the original “Davis Island Fishing Fools.” The club is well recognized by the NPS and others as a strong and important voice for the island. Continued growth in membership of sportsmen that have a common interest enables DIFF to continue to be a factor on Davis Island.
Your membership and support is important.
