Catch and Release Tips
To Minimize Stress and Injury

  • NC Sea Grant urges the use of Circle Hooks to reduce gut hooking and fish mortality.
  • Once fish takes the bait, Don't jerk the line to set hook.
  • Circle hooks will slide into the corner of fish's mouth as it swims away.
  • Quickly scoop up fish into landing net to minimize handling.
  • Keeping fish immersed in water, gently remove hook.
  • Using wet gloves, cradle fish under its belly and swirl it gently in water to restore breathing.  Keep hands away from gills.
  • Release the Red Drum.

he eighteenth annual DIFF Club Surf Fishing Tournament was held September 26 to September 28, 2002.  We were very fortunate with the weather as it rained only before and after the tournament which was free of precipitation.  There were 145 registered entrants, eight of whom did not participate for various reasons.  The following fish were entered officially:

Red Drum......12
Flounder.......7
Blue Fish.....39
Whiting.......24
Black Drum....39
Croaker.......41


Of the 137 entrants on the island, 85 entered fish officially.  I am sure that those who did not enter caught fish anyway…they just did not submit them.

or how I got my handle

en years ago in November, Alvin (Hot Tuna) Tans invited me to join him and seven other friends for four days of surf fishing on Davis Island.  We loaded up his old chocolate brown Suburban bristling with antennas and headed for Core Banks South.  After an uneventful ferryboat ride courtesy of AWFC, we checked into cabin 10-A and made the first of many beach runs looking for clean water and holes.  I came to find that no matter the quality of the water or the size of the hole, sometimes the fish aren't "in".  Phrases such as, "it needs to
